What determines carpet durability?
It?s easy to see why carpeting is so popular because it makes a room glamorous, inviting, and warm. What is density, and what does it have to do with quality?
Weight alone doesn't tell the entire story about the quality and, while a heavier rug can be more durable, it can also be too heavy for some installations. That leads to damage!
Density refers to how closely together the fibers are tufted. A density number should be on the label, and a good range is 3500 to 5,000. You can also check it yourself by bending back a sample card. If you see a lot of white space, be sure to ask the floor covering professional about it.
What is a twist?
Twist refers to the number of times fiber is turned per inch. Generally used in higher pile rugs, the higher the twist number, the less chance of unraveling. The twist has a one-to-six rating system, and a good twist number is four or higher, which should also be on the label.
Finally, when you compare, be sure to do it grade-by-grade. For example, if you compare a specific rug with another rug of the same style but lower or higher quality, your results won't be accurate. It's like the old (but true) cliche says, "apples to apples and oranges to oranges--but not apples to oranges."
